What auto insurance actually covers

Most policies bundle several types of coverage. Here's what each one does — and what it doesn't.

🛡️

Liability

Required by law

Required in every state. Covers damage and injuries you cause to others. Does NOT cover your own car or injuries.

💥

Collision

Recommended

Covers your car after an accident — whether you caused it or not. Required if your car is financed.

🌪️

Comprehensive

Worth adding

Covers non-collision damage: theft, fire, weather, animals, vandalism. Usually cheap to add.

👻

Uninsured Motorist

Often required

Covers you when the other driver has no insurance (1 in 8 drivers). Often required by law.

🏥

Medical / PIP

State-dependent

Covers medical bills for you and your passengers regardless of fault. Required in no-fault states.

🚗

Gap Insurance

If financed

Covers the gap between what your car is worth and what you owe. Critical for new cars.

Key decision

Full coverage vs. liability only

The most common question — and the answer depends on your car's value.

🔵

Full coverage

Liability + Collision + Comp
  • Car valued over $10,000
  • Financed or leased vehicle
  • New or recent purchase
  • You couldn't afford to replace it out-of-pocket
  • You drive in high-theft or harsh-weather areas
Avg. cost: $134/mo nationally

Liability only

State minimum
  • Car valued under $5,000
  • Paid off, low market value
  • You can self-insure for repairs
  • Low annual mileage (under 7,000)
  • Perfect driving record, low-risk area
Avg. cost: $58/mo nationally

The rule: If your annual collision + comprehensive premium is more than 10% of your car's actual cash value, consider dropping to liability only.
